Outdoor recreation is an important part of many people’s lives. – There’s something to be said about getting out and going on an adventure. Research shows that about 77% of Americans — more than three out of four — view outdoor recreation as an important part of their lives. In other words, spending time outdoors matters a lot to a lot of people. To be fair, this doesn’t mean that all of these people go river rafting, but it does mean that they don’t just enjoy that type of activity, they consider it to be an integral part of their lives.
People love whitewater rafting. – All that being said, research does show that people love to go rafting. In fact, about 28% of all Americans — more than one in four — either currently participate in or intend to participate in whitewater rafting. That’s no small number. If you don’t know what it is about hitting the water that so many people love, the only way to find out is to go on a trip.
It’s serious exercise. – Whitewater rafting is serious exercise. The average 155-pound person burns 352 calories when out on a trip down the river, while the average 180-pound person burns 409. Hiking, the most popular of all camping activities, only burns 286 calories when the average 155-pound person goes, and only 326 calories when the average 180-pound person goes. You might not think that that’s a big difference, but the average hike doesn’t last more than an hour or two, while rafting can be an all day activity. In other words, you’re going to get a lot more exercise doing one than the other.
