Though running may not get all the recognition it deserves, it is one of the most popular sports in the United States today. Every year, more than 15,000 5K races and 2,000 half-marathons are held in the U.S. The marathon, 26.2 miles long and arguably the most famous race there is, is hosted more than a thousand times every year with more than 500,000 runners competing. Last year, the New York City Marathon alone saw more than 50,000 people cross the finish line.
Running, of course, isn’t exclusive to competitors. In 2012, more than 57 million Americans ran or jogged at least once. As a sport, running may not have the same fan base as basketball or football (among others) but overall, Americans certainly like to stay on their feet.
And why not? Running is an excellent aerobic exercise, which the U.S. Department of Health recommends everyone to do at least 150 minutes a week (or about 21 minutes a day). Running has been proven to lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, and even increase life expectancy. There’s more to running than just the medals.
Due to running’s popularity, entire businesses have been created to cater to runners, and they do more than just provide sneakers and headbands. Personalized gifts for runners offer products that runners can enjoy both on and off the race track. From running jewelry and running journals to running decals and even runners wine glasses, these items are a wonderful thing to give to your runner friend or loved one. Chances are, you know at least one person in your life that likes to run (considering approximately 20% of the population does). For them, these gifts will show how much you truly care about them and the sport they love.
